Ethan Suplee Told Joe Rogan He Still Struggles With Body Image Issues

In an interview yesterday on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, actor Ethan Suplee detailed his long journey to healthier living, and revealed that he struggles at times to appreciate how far he’s come.

Looking back at photos of himself at his heaviest, Suplee opened up about some of the negative feelings that he still deals with. “It’s incredibly satisfying, but look,” he said. “The reality is that I have mental illness and I don’t look at myself and think, ‘God I look great.’ I see nothing but negative stuff every day and I try to convince myself.'”

Asked when he first started to experience feelings of body dysmorphia, Suplee recalled going on a diet at five years old and hearing people tell him that the way he looked was wrong. “I wasn’t obese at five. I was a chubby five year old, but I was super active,” he said. “I wasn’t eating junk food all day long.”

To help improve his mindset, Suplee said he now focuses on the gains he’s happiest about achieving since undergoing his dramatic fitness transformation. “Usually it’s my traps. I can look at my traps because [they’re] lean—there’s not a bunch of loose skin hanging there. They’re not all scarred up from surgeries. I look at my traps and go, ‘Okay that looks good.’ And based on that I can start to feel okay about myself.”

Suplee also records a popular podcast of his own, American Glutton, where he invites guests to talk about their own weight loss experiences, and frequently posts inspirational photos and words of motivation to his Instagram account. His journey to self-acceptance is proof that no matter how strong your body is, you still need to get your mind right, too.
