A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the part of your brain gets cut off. Just like any organ, the brain needs oxygen to function properly. If the blood supply, carrying the oxygen, gets stopped, brain cells start dying. This makes these medical emergencies one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide.

Due to how serious strokes are, researchers and medical experts have been exploring measures that can cut their risk.

Some factors like genetics are out of your control but others can be affected.

One thing you can switch up to lower your likelihood of having a stroke is your diet.

What you eat can have a significant impact on your risk, according to the American Heart Association.

The food that you can get for as little as 73p and can slash your risk of stroke is spinach.

The leafy green is packed with various nutrients, vitamins and minerals, including magnesium, potassium, fibre, folate, vitamin K and iron.

This nutritional powerhouse is exactly what makes spinach good at lowering the likelihood of having a stroke.

For example, the vitamin B folate found in the green leaves can lower the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure, according to a study published in Journal of the American Medical Association.

Another important spinach component is potassium.

People who consumed high amounts of potassium were 27 percent less likely to have an ischaemic stroke, according to the National Library of Medicine.

Unlike with the previous study where the link was strong for those with high blood pressure, the potassium study noticed this was especially true for those without hypertension.

The research also suggests that potassium can cut your overall risk of stroke or dying prematurely for any reason.

The Harvard School of Public Health explains that potassium helps to relax your blood vessels and lower the sodium in your body as well as your blood pressure.

Another part of spinach able to lower the likelihood of having a stroke is magnesium.

A cup of boiled spinach contains around 157 milligrams of this mineral, meeting nearly half of the recommended dietary allowance for women.

While the same amount represents 37 percent of the allowance for men.

Spinach is also a good source of fibre.

Good dietary fibre intake is linked to a lower risk of stroke, according to the National Library of Medicine.

Spinach contains around 2.4 grams of fibre per 100-gram serving.

So, thanks to its many beneficial components, including spinach in a healthy diet may be helpful for lowering your likelihood of having a stroke.
