  • Type 2 diabetes: Best food for breakfast to lower blood sugar

Eating a healthy diet is crucial for type 2 diabetes. Eating a wide range of foods including fruit, vegetables and some starchy foods like pasta is recommended to keep sugar, fat and salt to a minimum.

Specific foods have been shown to have blood sugar lowering properties and one of those foods is cod.

Cod is a good source of protein, may help manage or prevent diabetes better than other types of meat.

Cod is a white fish and is a firmer type of fillet that can withstand more aggressive cooking methods such as grilling, as well as bolder seasoning.

Cod can also be marinated before cooking, giving it time to absorb flavours.

The NHS advises that at least two portions of fish a week is consumed.

Fish provides a good source of protein and omega 3 fatty acids.

Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid which has been linked with improved heart health.

Diabetes experts recommend eating fish for cardiovascular health.

Cassandra Rico, associate director of nutrition and medical affairs for the American Diabetes Association said: “Fish is a great protein choice, a source of healthy fat and it contains important vitamins and minerals.”

Diabetes.co.uk said on their website: “Fish is a good food for people with diabetes.

You should also keep sugar, fat and salt to a minimum and eat breakfast, lunch and dinner every day – don’t skip meals.

Being active can also lower blood sugar, according to the NHS. It explains: “Physical exercise helps lower your blood sugar level. You should aim for 2.5 hours of activity a week.”

Doing anything that gets you out of breath counts as being active. This could include fast walking, climbing stairs or doing more strenuous housework or gardening.

Losing weight if you’re overweight can also help control blood sugar levels.
