Wear glasses not contact lenses to protect against coronavirus, doctor says

It could be wise to wear glasses instead of contact lenses during the coronavirus pandemic.

The NHS has warned the public to avoid touching their faces – as this could lead to the spread of COVID-19.

This includes the eye area, so it’s probably not wise to be taking contacts in and out.

Dr Sonal Tulsi recommends using glasses instead.

This is because they are less likely to aggravate your eyes or make you rub them.

The expert from the American Academy of Ophthalmology told ABC13: “Substituting glasses for lenses can decrease irritation and force you to pause before touching your eye”.

While the simple swap could decrease your chances of contracting the virus, it won’t protect you from it.

New health guidelines urge Brits to maintain social distance from others.

Boris Johnson has warned the public to stay at home – and gatherings of more than two people are banned.

You should only venture outside if it's completely necessary.

Reasons for heading out include shopping for essentials, basic exercise, medical needs, and travelling to and from work, but only if it is absolutely impossible to work from home.

All social events except funerals have been banned too.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, you should also maintain good hygiene.

Washing your hands regularly is a must, as well as disinfecting your home to get rid of any lingering germs.

Boris Johnson has warned that without a "huge national effort," the NHS is likely to become overwhelmed.
