How Watching 'The Office' Helped One Fan Save Someone's Life

When a Tucson man found a woman slumped over the steering wheel of her car, he knew he had to do something but had never been officially trained in CPR. Fortunately, he did get an informal training of sorts thanks to our friends at the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin. Yes, he saved a woman’s life using a technique he learned from watching The Office.

Cross Scott (as far as we know, no relation to Michael Scott), saw the unconscious woman in the driver’s seat of her car, and when he was unable to get her attention, broke the window with a rock. When he realized she had no pulse, he knew what he had to do. The first thing that popped into his head, he told the Arizona Daily Star, was the episode of The Office where the gang at Dunder Mifflin learned how to do CPR to the tune of the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive.”

In fact, Scott (in this case Cross, not Michael) sang the song out loud as he began chest compressions, picturing Michael Scott’s face as he sang the song on the show. After a minute, the woman was able to take a breath and threw up. The Tucson paramedics arrived on the scene a few minutes later and said that thanks to Scott’s quick thinking, the woman’s life was saved. She was later released from the hospital.

Now, before you go off binging your favorite sitcom for first-aid tips, please keep in mind that most of that episode of The Office actually depicted the wrong ways to do CPR. The one crucial exception was the timing of chest compressions to the classic disco song. Luckily, that’s all Cross Scott needed (though he told the Arizona Daily Star he will now get official CPR training.)

The moral of the story is that you never know where you’ll learn a skill that may come in handy — and even save a life —  one day. Michael Scott would definitely be proud.
