Fasting can help with cancer treatment

Short-term fasting can make chemotherapy more effective and improve quality of life/research results on the effect of fasting in cancer patients

Short-term fasting apparently improves the quality of life of women during the chemotherapy and the therapy is better tolerated. This is the result of a pilot study of the medical teams to Stephan P. Bauer field, and Professor Dr. med. Andreas Michalsen, 50 patients with breast or ovarian cancer. (BMC Cancer 2018, 18: 476).

The women began 36 hours before the start of chemotherapy and ended the fasting 24 hours after the end of the chemotherapy consisting of six cycles of treatment. During fasting, the patients were allowed to take every day water, herbal tea and vegetable juice and vegetable broth, with a maximum of 350 kilo calories (kcal). According to the study, the women tolerated the short-term fasting well, the quality of life was less impaired than in the comparison group without fasting. In addition, had been reduced during the first week after the chemotherapy Fatigue.

Already in 2015, a pilot study from Berlin, had come to the conclusion that short-term fasting is safe and side effects, can weaken the blood. In the case of the fast women had recovered, for example, the red blood cells (erythrocytes), faster. (de Groot S et al./BMC Cancer 2015). After the positive results of the pilot study, a randomized sequence is currently under study, “New forms of eating, to accompany the chemotherapy for gynecological cancers”.

Fasting individually check

In naturopathy, fasting has proven to be a “fasting” in the sense of a cleansing and Detoxification of the body. It can also be as a transition to a healthy diet makes sense, especially for cancer patients. “Whether fasting is a cancer disease helpful, depends on many factors”, says Dr. med. György Irmey, Medical Director of the society for Biological cancer defence e. V. (GfBK) in Heidelberg. In the case of strongly pronounced physical weakness or weight loss, the GfBK advised against fasting. “A fasting diet that lasts longer than four days, is also required for in Healthy of a professional escort, in the case of cancer patients.”

Helpful Interval Fasting

Dr. med. Anette Jänsch, co-author of the Berlin study, by 2018, the interval fasting for a useful Supplement to short-term fasting. A meal will be complied with break from 14 to 16 hours between dinner and Breakfast. The Doctor is on the 19. Patient-doctor-Congress of the GfBK on 18. and 19. May 2019 in Heidelberg, the topic of “fasting and healthy nutrition, and stressful therapies” light. The effect of prolonged sober phases were examined, researchers from San Diego at 2413 breast cancer patients in the “Women’s Healthy Eating and Living”study (Marinac CR et al./JAMA Oncol 2016). The result: In women, sleep longer and more than 13 hours of fasting, in the early stage of the risk by 36%, of developing cancer again breast cancer.

Can short can time fast cancer tumors to shrink?

Cancer cells seem to be fasting more vulnerable. In animal experiments, a researcher showed the team around Prof. Valter Longo in Los Angeles, that chemotherapy in mice was more effective, if you had two to three days to eat anything beforehand (Lee C et al./Science translational Medicine 2012). Reason, the “differential resistance to stress, according to Valter Longo”. Healthy cells and tumor cells respond differently to the sugar shortage in the case of a prolonged reduction in calories. “A healthy cell of the body is set up evolution to the times of Famine and slows down then their cell division cycle. She changes so to speak, in the saving mode, and shows itself to be resistant to stress,“ says Dr. med. Annette Jänsch. Tumor cells respond to Sugar deprivation with the Stress and its easier due to chemotherapeutic attack.

Dr. med. Annette Jänsch on the 19. Patient-doctor-Congress “self-determined” (18. and 19. May 2019) two lectures:
