Camu Camu: The latest superfood taking the world by storm

Hailed as the new acai, myrciaria dubia (aka, Camu Camu)  is the latest superfood set to take the world by storm.

Native to South American rainforests, the plant grows along riverbanks and bears purplish-red fruit that have a distinctly sour, citrus taste. It has long been used by locals for medicinal purposes but has only recently made its mark on the rest of the world.

You can find it in powder or capsule form at selected health food stores, making it perfect to sprinkle into smoothies or add to baked goods. It can also be mixed with honey or yoghurt and be used as a face mask.

As far as nutritional properties go, Camu Camu has 60 times more vitamin C than an orange and is filled with potassium, antioxidants and amino acids that aid in fighting inflammation and supporting the immune system. In addition, it acts as a natural energy booster and has even been said to ward off viral infections and cure herpes.

But full disclosure: there’s very limited research out there on Camu Camu, and its miraculous curing and preventative properties have yet to be proven.

Something to consider before you stock up.
