If you’re not already doing it, you’ve definitely heard about it. The ketogenic diet is truly lapping up the limelight right now and even Halle Berry is on board. Yep, the 51-year-old credits “the keto lifestyle” with managing her type 2 diabetes and keeping her jaw-dropping body in shape.
“The keto lifestyle offers so many benefits such as weight loss, (mums that’s how we get rid of our baby bellies), appetite control, more energy and better mental performance,” she wrote on Instagram. “If you’re like me, you can possibly reverse type 2 diabetes, you’ll experience better physical endurance, better skin and also less acne if that’s an issue. And it even helps control migraines!”

For me, being athletic and super fit is also about being still, stretching and breathing. Including stretching in my fitness program helps my muscles stay long, limber, improves my mobility and range of motion and, most importantly, helps me avoid injuries. So what exactly is this crazy popular eating plan?
“A ketogenic diet relies on fat as the key source of energy, while severely limiting carbohydrates, and allowing moderate amounts of protein,” Accredited Practising Dietitian and Spokesperson for the Dietitians Association of Australia, Nicole Dynan, told Women’s Health.
“As the main source of energy, the body breaks down fat for energy, which leads to a build up of acids called ‘ketones’ in the body. This process is known as ‘ketosis’. The body enters ketosis when carbohydrate intake is reduced to around 50g per day, or less.”
Here’s what that looks like for Halle…
The star often shares her go-to keto meals on Instagram, chowing down on four dishes per day. She typically starts with a juice of beets and Purium’s Scoop of Greens for breakfast followed by a handful of green beans with bolognese for lunch.
Halle snacks on cheese stuffed cherry tomatoes and spring onions before a dinner involving grilled fish, olive salsa and mashed cauliflower.
“I don’t really eat pasta, anything with sugar, it’s very much meat-based,” she told PEOPLE. “I eat meat, I enjoy chicken and beef and a lot of vegetables.”
On a recent appearance on Live! With Kelly and Ryan, she shared that the plan works for her as a diabetic.
“I eat healthy fats all day long, avocado, oil, coconut oil and I use butter, but don’t have any sugar. So when your body gets trained to burn fats, it’s constantly on fat-burning mode—that’s the secret,” she said.
She’s even managed to make the diet family-friendly for her daughter, Nala, 10, and son Maceo, 4.
“My kids love stuffed zucchini halves. They’re my answer to a stuffed baked potato,” she said. “They love it.”
But before you jump on this bandwagon, speak to a pro. Especially if you have existing medical conditions like type 2 diabetes.
“If you choose to undertake a ketogenic diet, this should be done under clinical supervision – with the guidance of a health professional, such as an Accredited Practising Dietitian,” Nicole says. “And as always, when it comes to nutrition, it’s important to remember that there is no one-size-fits-all approach.”
