Pizza Hut Launches Vegan Jackfruit Pizza

Americans get a lot of flack for what we eat, and honestly, it kind of makes sense when you see how even mega-chains like Pizza Hut offer more special dietary options abroad. The pizza chain just released a new barbecued jackfruit-topped vegan pizza which sounds totally delicious — but it’s only available in the UK.

The new pie, called the Vegan Jack’N’Ch**se Pizza, is topped with Violife vegan cheese, tomato sauce, barbecue jackfruit, sweet corn, red onions, and peppers, along with a drizzle of barbecue sauce to top everything off.

Jackfruit is one of the hottest meat substitutes around. Unlike others, which rely on soy and pea proteins to make something that could pass for the carnivores, savory jackfruit is simply the unripe flesh of a tropical fruit that, when simmered in barbecue sauce, broth, or another liquid, takes on the texture of pulled pork. Crisp it up a bit and you’ve got a surprisingly “meaty” bite of vegan vittles.

This is Pizza Hut’s third vegan pizza option in the UK, while we in the US still don’t even have one. The other flavors include the vegan veggie, which is topped with vegan cheese, tomato sauce, spinach, peppers, red onions, sweet corn, and mushrooms, and the vegan Margherita, with vegan cheese and tomato sauce.

They have three vegan crust options, too: pan pizza, all-American thin crust, and a gluten-free crust.

The latest pizza option was introduced as part of Veganuary, a movement that calls for people to go meat-and-dairy-free for the month of January. It will only be available for the month unless more than 10,000 Vegan Jack’N’Ch**se pies are ordered during the month, in which case it will be permanently added to the menu.

As much as we’re craving these vegan pizza options stateside, at least there’s one point of solace we can take — no one should be putting that much corn on a pizza, even if it is vegan.
