The peri-menopause is the transitional phase, and this can include the 12 months that follow a person’s last ever period.

Typically, the first sign that menopause is approaching is periods occurring less regularly, or they may be heavier or lighter than usual.
The menopause
The menopause begins 12 months after the last period (or when ovaries have been surgically removed).
Vaginal dryness, itching and discomfort can be experienced during this stage.
Hot flushes are also common, which causes the woman to feel a sudden sensation of heat in the upper body; excess sweating and red patches on the skin may also arise.
This feeling can begin in the face, neck or chest, and can progress upwards or downwards.
This symptom of menopause tends to occur in the first year after menstruation ends, but can continue for up to 14 years thereafter.

Crying spells and periods of irritability are also commonplace for people going through the change.
Physical changes occur too, which can include weight gain, breast reduction, and changes in hair colour, texture, and volume.
The post-menopause
This refers to the years after the menopause, but it can be difficult to determine when menopause moves into this stage.
