Despite the worrying rise in Covid cases, Boris Johnson confirmed his plans yesterday to lift all remaining legal coronavirus restrictions in England from July 19. Scientists and politicians have described the move as rash and have called on the Prime Minister to reconsider them.

The Government has decided to lift all remaining coronavirus restrictions despite the number of coronavirus cases surging.

They have justified the move as they say if lifting restrictions are postponed any longer, there’s a risk the peak of infections of this summer’s wave could be pushed to the autumn.

They say this could make things worse as flu and other viruses will start to circulate later in the year and so it is better to experience a peak in infections sooner rather than later.

Boris Johnson has admitted “cases will rise as we unlock” with infection rates and hospital admissions already rising sharply should we be concerned about this spike?

What does the data say?

There has been a terrifying spike in the number of deaths in the UK of people who have died within 28 days of a positive test.

The number of deaths has surged by 56.2 percent over the last seven days.

While the number of Brits testing positive for the virus has lept over the last seven days by a worrying 28.1 percent.

The Delta variant continues to be the dominant strain of the virus in the UK.

It has been the rise in the number of cases of the Delta variant which has caused the most concern in the UK.

The latest data shows the number of Delta variant cases in the UK has risen sharply, in the two weeks leading up the July cases were up by 15,457.

This is a huge spike compared to April, as before April 17 zero cases of this variant were reported in the UK.

The PM has said the vaccine rollout has been at the core of the UK’s ability to unlock next week.

He said: “The phenomenal vaccine rollout has offered every adult some protection against the virus, and the crucial link between cases, hospitalisations and deaths is weakened.”

To date, 87.2 percent of the adult population have received their first dose of the Covid vaccine.

While 66.2 percent of adult Brits have been fully vaccinated having had two doses of the vaccine.

Although the Government is pushing ahead with its planned reopening the PM has urged caution.

He said in a Downing Street press conference: “Caution is absolutely vital, and we must all take responsibility so we don’t undo our progress, ensuring we continue to protect our NHS.”

Health minister Edward Argar told Sky News that despite the lifting of restrictions guidance would still be in place for the public.

He said: ”There will still be guidance in place and we would urge caution and the innate common sense of the British people around things like mask-wearing.”
