Here's Why Women Feel More Remorse After One-Night Stands

The global coronavirus pandemic has dealt quite the blow to our love lives. For those of you who are already coupled up – congratulations, you’ve managed to avoid what can only be described as an excruciating exercise of online dating via video chat and Zoom, where you now have to watch the other person eat into their microphone and somehow hope a “spark” translates via the screen. 

Safe to say, what used to be the ease of a date and potential one night-stand has become incredibly difficult to muster in 2021. Though restrictions around Australia have eased considerably, there’s still great caution to be exercised in the realm of dating. But if a new study is to be believed, it appears this kind of caution existed long before the pandemic, too. 

Researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology published a study involving 263 students, aged 19 to 37, to see how the behaviour of men and women is affected by regret after casual sex. The team of researchers conducted two questionnaires at 4.5-month intervals and the answers said a lot about the sexes.

While sexual remorse isn’t exactly a huge factor for both sexes, still it appears women experience higher levels of regret after a one-night stand compared to men, with 35 per cent of respondents admitting to feelings of guilt, compared to just 20 per cent of men. The study also revealed that women had greater concerns about pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease, and were more likely to be disappointed by the quality of their partner, too. For those who felt gratified or sexually attracted to their partner, remorse was lower. 

Though this may be the case, the negative experience didn’t stop anyone from engaging in casual sex again. Rather, the study seemed to prove that while most negative emotions are designed to protect us, regret really serves no purpose and consequently, we go out and repeat our actions again and again. 

Another interesting point is that fewer women compared to men felt regret about passing up a one-night stand. While 80 per cent of women said they were happy about turning down the chance of casual sex, only 40 per cent of men could say the same,
