Melissa McCarthy’s Trick For Beating High Heel Pain At The Oscars Is Totally Genius
Wearing heels for an extended period of time—like, uh, when you’re going to the Oscars— can be hard AF on your feet. But Melissa McCarthy may have found a new way to stave off shoe-induced food pain—and it’s super popular right now.
According to the E! Live From The Red Carpet special correspondents, via Bustle, Melissa slathered CBD oil on her toes before she got to the Oscars. They didn’t go into details about why, but it’s safe to guess she did it to help prevent foot pain. Because, heels. (It should be noted, though, that Melissa and her husband, Ben Falcone, changed into matching Adidas tracksuits for the Vanity Fair after party—because comfiness is key.)
She’s not the only one who tried this trick: Several stylists stocked their pre-Oscars kits with CBD oil like Lord Jones Body Lotion to rub on their clients’ feet before they put on their red carpet heels, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Wait, can CBD oil really help prevent foot pain?
That’s a hard…maybe. CBD—which stands for cannabidiol, the anti-inflammatory oil derived from the hemp plant—has shown promising results for pain management. (PS: CBD oil will not get you high.)
“Several studies show that CBD reduced chronic pain with muscle spasms, arthritis, and nerve pain,” Taz Bhatia, MD, an integrative health expert, previously told Women’s Health. Dr. Bhatia referenced a 2012 study in the Journal of Experimental Medicine and a 2016 study in the European Journal of Pain, both of which found reduced chronic pain or arthritis pain levels with CBD.
Timothy Welty, PharmD, chair of the department of clinical sciences at Drake University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, however, said that CBD oil might only enhance pain-relieving medications (like Tylenol or Advil) and “likely doesn’t control pain” on its own.
But tbh, all of this research on CBD oil and pain relief (along with any other reported benefits of CBD, like anxiety relief), is pretty new, and experts say that it’s possible that some of the benefits are due to a placebo effect, meaning merely thinking that it will help your foot pain actually helps make the pain go away. (Hey, I’ll take it.)
Still, if you want to give it a try, like Melissa, aim for CBD oils and creams made with emu oil or coconut oil, Joel Greengrass, CEO of Theramu, a company that makes CBD oils and creams, previously told Women’s Health. According to Greengrass, those oils penetrate your skin (and deliver CBD to aching muscles) better than olive oil.
