The First Indigenous And Bisexual Bachelorette Is Finally Here

While there certainly have been less than successful relationships formed on seasons of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, the show continues to gain a loyal following. There’s something about watching two people experience the awkwardness of dating and learning about one another in real time, that proves for compelling TV. And given that for most of us the global pandemic has dealt our own dating lives quite the blow, we can only help but live vicariously through those vying for love on the dating show.

But given the diverse nature of Australia, this wasn’t reflected on the show. Audiences longed to see a diverse cast celebrated on the series, but it came up short. Now though, Network 10 is looking to usher in a new era of its hit series as it announces its first ever bisexual bachelorette. Set to hand out the roses in 2021’s Bachelorette is Brooke Blurton and already, fans couldn’t be happier.

“Australia, say hello to your 2021 Bachelorette, Brooke Blurton,” Network Ten wrote in the announcement posted to social media. Many will be familiar with Brooke as one of many who starred in Nick ‘Honey Badger’ Cummins’ season of The Bachelor and then The Bachelor in Paradise, but who sadly didn’t find love on either.

Brooke said about the new role, “I am so ready for this. I’ve done it twice before and now, having the opportunity to choose my person and who I want in my life, is a truly unique and special experience.” Brooke added, “My perfect person is someone that loves me for me. I hope thy offer shared values and compassion for others. All the dreamy things! I’m so excited and hope that I finally find that person I’ve been waiting for.”

As the first bisexual and Indigenous bachelorette, Brooke will make history. The 26-year-old said in an interview with The Daily Telegraph, “Times are more progressive and sexuality and gender expression are just so fluid these days. I am not too sure if Australia is ready for it. I hope they are. I certainly am.”

And we certainly hope they are, too. Having Brooke take the title of bachelorette is a huge win for diversity and the significance of such a decision shouldn’t be underestimated. To celebrate love of all kinds on the screen is to inspire young people of all ages to embrace their sexuality and take pride in their identity. Though the format of the show is yet to be released, nor are there any revelations about contestants, we can only hope that the casting is more diverse and that there are male and female contestants.

Brooke’s announcement comes after it was revealed Jimmy Nicholson would be the new bachelor for 2021, also delivering some much-needed diversity. In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, he said he was excited for the new season, telling the publication, “I am ready to open up my heart and meet someone.”

He went on to add, “I hope to meet someone with similar values that I can have fun with and that shares the same zest for life as myself. The Bachelor franchise has produced many success stories and I hope to be next.”

The new series of The Bachelor is set to air on Ten very soon.
