More than a third had at least one symptom of burnout while 40 per cent had suffered depression, they told a prepandemic study.

Of more than 7,000 nurses quizzed in the US, 5.5 per cent – around 400 – had experienced suicidal thoughts in the previous 12 months.

This was compared with 4.3 per cent in the wider workforce.

Author Dr Liselotte Dyrbye, of the Mayo Clinic, said: “While the findings of our study are serious enough, we recognise the impact of the current pandemic has dramatically compounded the situation.”

The study was in the American Journal of Nursing.
