Although doctors reassured the ballroom and latin expert that there was no lump, they recommended that the star go for a full “body MOT” to get checked, after her hormone levels came back as “all over the place”. The star showed her continued gratitude to those who urged her to make the appointment in the first place, and echoed this warning to all other fellow women. She said: “To all the women out there, check yourselves, it’s super important and don’t put anything off.” Now the results of Shirley’s “MOT” are in, and the star’s health journey has taken a worrying turn.
Posting on Instagram again today (Tuesday ,October 26), Shirley started the caption with an ominous “so blood work back…”.
The star then went on to say that she is required to have an appointment at Kings College Hospital London to “check certain odd things”.
She said: “I went to have a lot of blood work done and now the testosterone levels have come back ultra high, adrenal glands need a scan, and my ovaries need a scan.
“My oestrogen levels are extremely low. All in all a little concerning. So that’s where we are at at the moment.
“They are going to set me up an appointment at Kings, which is an amazing hospital”.
Although the star seemed to be staying positive about another trip to hospital, thousands of comments from fans and fellow celebs started flooding in, sending their love to the star.
Fellow Strictly judge Motsi Mabuse said: “Take care of yourself.” Whilst ex-Strictly finalist, and social media influencer Joe Sugg wrote: “Sending love Shirley, wishing you all the best.”
The star signed off the video update saying that she loved everyone watching, and was grateful to those who “started [her] on this road”.
Despite not going into full detail about what the blood tests found and what this could mean for the judge, Shirley is bravely documenting her journey into finding the source of the problem.
Medical News Today states that declining oestrogen levels can lead to a variety of health concerns and symptoms.
It continues to add that oestrogen can vary for many reasons, the most obvious for low levels being age. As women approach and enter the menopause these levels will naturally drop.
Shirley has talked openly about her menopause in the past, saying that the process made her “depressed, tired and anxious.”

The star also mentioned that she uses bio-identical hormones in order to curb menopause symptoms, so her low oestrogen levels may be an indicator of another condition.
Medical News Today states that oestrogen decline can be down to the following things:
- Premature ovarian failure
- Congenital conditions, such as Turner syndrome
- Thyroid disorders
- Excessive exercise
- Being severely underweight
- Chemotherapy
- Low-functioning pituitary gland
- Family history.
Due to these low levels individuals can experience irregular periods, infertility, weak bones, painful intercourse, depression and hot flushes. So it is crucial to talk to a medical professional if you find yourself struggling.
In reference to the ovary and adrenal gland scan that Shirley is required to have, this might be a precautionary check for tumours.
Scans can take multiple forms, but the most common for both ovaries and glands is a CT scan. This allows medical professionals to take a detailed picture of certain areas.
This 3D image is then used to check for any abnormalities and or tumours in the specific areas.
An ultrasound is also used to check ovaries. In comparison to a CT scan, this uses sound waves to create an image on a video screen – similar to what women have done when they are pregnant. It can be used to find an ovarian tumor and to check if it is a solid mass (tumor) or a fluid-filled cyst.
Common tell-tale signs of adrenal cancer include hormone changes in women – this may also cause an excess growth of facial hair or hair loss on their head. Whereas a common sign of ovarian cancer is discomfort in the tummy or pelvic area and a need to go to the toilet more often.
