Acid reflux diet: The worst drinks that aggravate the painful condition

If the sphincter allows fluid from the stomach to enter the oesophagus, acid reflux occurs. Gastrointestinal surgeon, Dr Leena Khaitan, reveals the drinks that could be making the condition worse. One type of drink that can “aggravate” acid reflex is caffeinated beverages, such as tea and coffee. Another drink to avoid if you suffer from acid reflux is carbonated beverages, as the bubbles expand the stomach, causing more pressure and pain.

One surprising “acid reflux trigger” is peppermint, so it might be best to stay away from peppermint tea, for example.

High acidity citrus fruits could also worsen symptoms, so avoid grapefruit and orange juice.

Dr Khaitan certified that alcohol has a “double whammy effect”.

She explained: “Alcohol relaxes the sphincter valve but it also stimulates acid production in the stomach.”

Dr Khaitan added: “Diet changes can significantly affect acid reflux and allow you to avoid other treatments.”

Thus, if you do suffer from acid reflux, it’s better to swap aggravating drinks to caffeine-free ginger tea.

Described as a “natural tummy tamer”, ginger can help to ease symptoms of acid reflux.

When it comes to food, Dr Khaitan recommends “a diet balanced with vegetables, protein and fruits”.

Some of the “best foods” for acid reflux include baked, broiled, or grilled chicken breast.

“Mild green veggies”, that are “easy on the stomach”, include: lettuce, celery, and sweet peppers.

Helpful fruits include watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew as they are all considered “low-acid fruits”.

You will also need to avoid certain foods that could make acid reflux worse.

Examples include chocolate which has a “trifecta of acid reflux problems: caffeine, fat, and cocoa”.

You will also need to cut down on tomatoes, including marinara sauce, ketchup, and tomato soup as they are all naturally high in acid.

Furthermore, fried foods are regarded as “some of the worst foods for reflux”.

Some of the worst offenders include French fries, onion rings, and fried chicken.

If dietary adjustments are not easing the symptoms of acid reflux, you are advised to speak to a healthcare professional, such as a pharmacist.

They might be able to offer you medication that works to block acid, thereby providing relief from acid reflux.

However, if you continually experience acid reflux that is severe, you need to book a doctor’s appointment.

Chronic acid reflux is known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and it can lead to oesophageal cancer.
