Kylie Gillies' Warning To All Australians After Skin Cancer Scare
Kylie Gillies has taken to Instagram to share a recent skin cancer scare, after ignoring the seemingly innocuous spot for months.
The Morning Show host shared side-by-side selfies of a patch of skin beneath her eye, revealing that she had been diagnosed with Actinic Keratosis.
“This is me rocking an Actinic Keratosis. On the left is what it originally looked like. Barely a spot,” she wrote.
Actinic Keratosis is a growth caused by damage from exposure to UV radiation. If left alone, the precancerous lesion may develop into skin cancer.
The 50-year-old admitted that she had let the spot go untreated for more than a year.
“I ignored it for 18 months because I was frightened of what the treatment would be. Stupid,” she explained.
“I realise the pic on the right LOOKS scary, but that was 2 weeks into treatment. And it was able to be completely covered by makeup. I had no days off work. Even on TV.”
She told Women’s Health that it was a guest on The Morning Show that prompted her to finally get it looked at.
“It was Sydney’s Real Housewife Matty Samaei! Matty owns a medi-spa and is a regular ‘expert’ on The Morning Show,” Kylie says.
“I think she got sick of me asking her about my ‘spot’. She said ‘Right Kylie! We’re going to get this fixed once and for all.’”
“Matty recommended Dr Natasha Cook because I had no idea where to go. You need a GP referral to see specialist dermatologist, so Matty was also able to get me in for a referral.”
She said she decided to share the “ugly pics” to encourage other Australians to get any suspicious spots checked out.
“I put it off for far too long, because I perceived it to be a hassle,” she told Women’s Health. “When really… It isn’t. I always found the time to make a hair appointment, but because I didn’t think this spot was “urgent” I kept putting it off. Just make the appointment! It could save your life, because early intervention is EVERYTHING.”
And now five weeks after her topical treatment, “There’s not even a mark. Obviously I’m no expert, just a TV chick. But just worth asking the question of your doctor.”
